UTILISE TECHNOLOGY TO CONNECT

We find ourselves in an unusual situation with the CoVid-19 restrictions. It has influenced many businesses, including mine, to adapt and change the way we do things. Before, I was never an advocate for online networking events, however, I have seen over the past five weeks not only my own business utilising technology, but also BNI.

Whilst my adaption to online, is perhaps only temporary, it has allowed me to continue to support my community in building knowledge and connection as they regularly engage with each other. In fact our inaugural event allowed members who found themselves stuck in Malaysia, or unable to travel from Geelong, Brisbane and Gippsland to still participate.

So, these 10 tips for ONLINE business networking,  are based on common sense rules focused on developing strong relationships, whether online and in person, and helping others to find solutions and the support needed to build business.

If structured well, workshops and networking events can still allow the sharing of knowledge, experience, resources and expertise in solving problems faced by your customers, suppliers, referrers and friends.

I know some people will think that conversations online can seem stilted and lack the free flow, but if you really invest in listening to others and taking note of the people involved, you can "connect the dots" and follow up offering help or advice later.

TIPS FOR ONLINE BUSINESS NETWORKING

1.    Listen carefully. Make a note of participants names and business. You can then follow up and explore possible synergies, perhaps with the use of LinkedIn or other social media.

2.    Be of value. Look out for opportunities for others when you are reading posts on social media, or the myriad of emails that come into your Inbox and forward relevant articles or pointers to  your network, it just takes a quick email or call.

3. Know, like and trust do not happen overnight. By connecting online through various avenues you are continuing to strengthen existing relationships and even open up new ones.

4.    Remember, online you can still contribute your experience and knowledge without expecting anything in return. Now is a particularly good time to help others and they will appreciate it.

5.    It is not always comfortable to have a conversation in real time or at an event online, but it does get easier with practice. So move out of your comfort zone and let the magic happen.

6.    Networking requires you to put in effort and not just sit back and expect business to come to you. If you want to build your business, do not use the current restrictions as an excuse.

7.    Currently, you have more time to  follow up and follow through when you offer assistance. Make the most of the opportunity to have a conversation, even if online.

8.    Build your brand and make connections regularly by attending the same networking events. If you are to wait several months to re-establish your connections, you will have wasted time.

9.    Everyone needs connection. It is a core need. Here is your chance to be authentic, honest and supportive.

10.    Your suppliers, clients, referrers and friends will be attending events that will enhance their opportunities to generate business, don't miss out on the chance to connect with them. Follow up and share conversations where you both can review and discuss the content of the events and workshops you have attended.

RELATIONSHIPS ARE KEY

In conclusion, you are a business owner, or professional and we are in this together. Conversations will open doors, and relationships are the key, build them now online NOW and catch up again in person when the UPTICK arrives.
