One Man in His Time Plays Many Parts
You will often read material, or be told of the importance of sharing some background of the team or people involved in your business. Often, when I am reviewing a website and seeking some understanding of the people who have registered for a YTM event, I will find that their is very little about them and infact, on occasions not even a photograph. If this is applies to your website, I recommend that you make some changes as people like to see who is behind the business. Of course, it is particularly helpful for me, for one, as I target the introductions at a YTM event so you make the appropriate connections and benefit from the conversations.
Today, I would like to introduce you to Leigh Powell, Business Strategist and Mentor, my husband of 35 years, father of two, father-in-law and grandfather of one delightful little boy.I first met Leigh through our mutual network. I was working in the Travel Industry as a consultant, and he was a close friend of one of my work colleagues. Our first encounter was a blind date, but that is another story!
You can read a little about Leigh Powell, on the Your Time Matters website, but today I have asked him to share more about his drivers. For those that have met Leigh at YTM, I am sure you will learn a little more about him than you knew before:-
How did you get involved in YTM?
Originally I supported Kerryn in running events and was the bell ringer at the Speednetworking evnts we ran, way back in 2013. Now I am activlely involved at each event and enjoy welcoming our particiapnts to our monthly events.
From engaging with and meeting so many small business owners at YTM and through my work as a volunteer mentor with SBMS (Small Business Mentoring Service) I could see how I could leverage my experience in corporate life to help small business owners review and then check the viability of their proposition.
“Why” do you do what you do ?
The problems small business owners face are the same yet all different in the context of their particular business. I love the challenge of interpreting and navigating different personalities to uncover a new approach to making a business bigger and better.
I am sure there are things that really give you a “buzz” about your business. Could you share 2 or three things with us?
When feedback is that what we have discussed and then implemented has made a real difference to the business. Often I hear “ you ask very different questions that have demanded I think differently about why I am doing what I do”
Body language is a key “tell all” when assessing if the impact of the mentoring is cutting through…so when I see bright eyes and dropped shoulders I know we are making progress and a willingness to change
Often business owners are reserved initially when our discussions commence perhaps because I am being invited in to see the reality of what has gone before. Usually this is driven by low business self-worth yet the evidence is often quite the opposite. This is very privileged place to be invited into!
As you are well aware, at Your Time Matters, we believe conversations, connections and knowledge enrich lives , personally and professionally, and impact on the lives of others, helping them learn, grow and achieve what matters to them. What impact would you like your influence to play?
Build confidence through a clarity about Proposition, problem that business solves, how to determine real value and then the price for services exchanged with existing and prospective clients.
In 3 years time, where would you like to see your business?
Offering real time consultation services specific to challenges faced and opportunities to be explored and providing a simple to follow self-help guide: the A-Z of planning and running a business using the evidence I have from working with over 200 small businesses
Can you share one tip on how to manage your time as a busy business professional?
Say No some times and dedicate a day a week to ONLY working ON your business
How have you benefited from being part of the YTM community?
I have found a rich, like minded and respectful community of both men and women, who have taken a risk to commence their business and are open to advice and guidance.
Please share your favourite quote with us about time or business .
“Stand in the shoes of those you want to influence AND
- “you can’t change others behavior, only your own"
When I asked Leigh where his quotes came from, as I have heard he use them many times, he replied
" My own "
How can people connect with you?
Obviously, people can meet up with me at a YTM event, but I can also be contacted via the YTM website HERE or connect on LinkedIn or give me a call 0422601950.
