Start Foundation

Our connection with the START foundation, began through a YTM co working day. When we met Michelle Jelleff, Founding Director of START, and heard of the START foundation’s mission to provide grants for a new limb, limb modification or equipment modification, to enable Amputees to participate in sport  to achieve their sporting dreams, we were inspired.

Taking part in sport is a way of life for many Australians. Regardless of the level”- Michelle Jelleff.

We built a strong relationship and Michelle spoke at several YTM events and collaborated with us to introduce ambassadors and grant recipients to our community who shared stories of resilience, teamwork and commitment, both in life, personally and professionally.

Sara Sham's - a START foundation Grant recipient shared her story and experience of the collaboration and teamwork involved in achieving her dream at a YTM Dinner in 2019.

START awarded a grant to Sara so she could purchase two running blades and strive to achieve her sporting dream. Sara’s sporting dream is to participate in this year’s Bridge to Brisbane 5km run and one day she hopes to run in the 14km Sydney City to Surf event.

In December 2022, after 10 years of empowering amputees in life through sport, the team at START foundation made the decision to wind up the organisation. When START foundation was established in 2013 it filled a funding gap that enabled amputees to purchase sports prosthesis or adaptive sports equipment, to help achieve their sporting dreams.

In 2013 the NDIS was established and over the years the funding gap that previously existed has slowly diminished. This was always START’s vision and while it’s sad to say goodbye to START, it’s also something to be celebrated and thankful for. In most cases, those with an amputation or limb difference can now receive funding to support their recreation and sport activities through the NDIS.

The Team and community of YTM were honoured to be connected to this organisation who had a vision that became a reality and influenced change for amputees.
