Why Wouldn't You Embrace the Power of Listening and Expanding Your Horizons?

Ever looked at goldfish in a bowl and thought about how bored they must get just swimming round and round in their space, unaware of what is outside of their bowl?

It's so easy to get caught up in our own perspectives and routines.

Why not engage in conversations that can be transformative and expand your horizons and move you out of “your bowl”.

Why Your Time Matters

When I started YTM, I wanted to create somewhere special.

A business networking community that would support business owners and those with a dream to be a business owner, but perhaps missing the confidence, courage and knowledge they needed.

I knew from my childhood experiences how business could ruin relationships and create friction. I wanted to provide much needed support. I knew not everyone knows where to find the support they need.

I also wanted to be stimulated and continually learning, while able to use my skills through years in education, life and have an opportunity to use my resourceful and creative approach.

What I have gained is an opportunity to connect with people with life experience unlike my own and my fascination as to why we are all different, and the part we can play. Every person has wisdom to share. Life is a kaleidoscope or a tapestry and some of you will recall my embroidered baby blanket business, where each stitch played its part.

Embrace the Power of Listening

I designed the inaugural YTM Awards dinner back in 2016 to encourage speakers to take up the challenge to speak to a topic, raise their profile and share their insights. Since then we have had a range of speakers and a range of topics, all hinged around WHY. Some people have missed out of the evening thinking that they would not be eleibible for an Award and thinking that it is only for members of the YTM community. But the truth is, speakers have been from within my network for sure, but been asked to speak because I know that they have insights to expand the thinking and horizons of many.

We have had such a diverse group of speakers and even ran the event online one year, when we were locked down.

Some of the speakers have been newbies to presenting in public and have rarely spoken in public in such a setting. I understand that this challenging, however the past teacher in me, is so proud of those that step into the spotlight and give it a go. They are all winners in my eyes and I am so delighted that they want to do it again, after the first time!

Benefits of Expanding Your Horizons

The diversity of speakers every year is inspiring, and all present learn something about themselves and others, simply by being in the room, joining in the conversations. and judging the Peoples’ Choice Award, based on a set a criteria. I am always interested to see what and who makes an impact just sharing their story, perspective or argument based on the topic of the year.

When we engage with diverse perspectives, we expand our horizons., exposed to new cultures, experiences, and ideas that can enrich our personal and professional lives. This not only makes us more empathetic and well-rounded individuals but also enhances our ability to innovate and solve problems creatively. It opens the door to new ideas and different ways of thinking. It's through these interactions that we can truly understand the depth and breadth of any topic.

Why wouldn't we make the most of it by learning and growing through our interactions with others? Every conversation is an opportunity to learn something new, to see the world from a different angle, and to develop as individuals and professionals.

Cultivating a curiosity mindset

This year, expect healthy debate and the challenge of ideas. The evening will start with a conversation with Scott Ko- strategist, social entrepreneur, system thinker, philosopher, and someone deeply passionate about cultivating a curiosity mindset and connection, both very important to me. Scott’s developed these skills with over 20 years of experience in management consulting for public and private sector alike, launching and growing his own startups, and transforming established businesses and NFPs.

He was the former CEO / COO of Leadership Victoria, he's the Founder and Director of ColourSpace Gallery, and he's a Partner at Humble Hub.

Plus I will  introduce you to our YTM Awards Dinner Speakers/competitors.  It always surprises me how people come into our lives in a variety of ways and each have something to teach us and share that broadens our thinking. and can make us aware of opportunities we may never have had any connection too.
